NEWTON DUMPED OUT BY FOUR-MIDABLE FRONT TWO
Newton United 0-10 Welton S & S C
Welton started their assault on the Kelly Read Cup in emphatic fashion as they brushed aside Newton United 10-0 at Powerstation Park.
If ever there was a dead-cert on the Sunday accumulator this was it, and front two James Drabble and Pete Sutton ensured a safe passage into round one.
Drabble, back in the starting XI and the vibrant Sutton found the Newton net four times each and Scott Coupland and Sam Gordon completed the scoring in a rampant Welton display.
Led in convoy majestically by manager Alastair Taylor along the A46, Welton arrived at Powerstation Park as early favourites to secure the elusive Kelly Read trophy.
After winning four-out-of-four and topping the Premier League the Social supporters were expecting a goal fest against lowly Newton and they were not disappointed.
The Newark-based Newton have also had a decent start and are second in Division 6, but even at their home pitch, the intimidating Powerstation Park, everyone was expecting the 69 league places that separated the sides to be a step to far for them.
Welton manager Taylor has always had a big affiliation with this competition and after last years’ heartache losing in the semi finals to local rivals Nettleham he would be looking to make amends this year.
Not for the first time this season the management had to reshuffle their pack as they were without several keys players. Top scorer Luke Clifford was absent due to family problems in Middlesbrough, defensive duo Will Carter and Ross Taylor had been sent away.
Carter was jetted off to Dubai for a two-week break to recover from a hectic start to the season and Taylor to a lilleshal in Glasgow in a bid to step up his recovery from his niggling leg injury.
The impressive Joe Snookes failed a late fitness test and didn’t travel but Welton did welcome back midfielder Sam Gordon from a two-week layoff.
Welton lined up with Ossai in goal, a new look back three of the reformed Jaz Dhindsa, S.Clifford and Lee Warman (making his debut for the club), Gordon right midfield, Sutton left wing with the usual central midfield trio of C.Wilkinson, T.Wilkinson and captain Stocks. Coupland was partnered upfront by James Drabble.
Welton started by kicking towards the field end and it didn’t take them long to get into their stride. After getting the better of the early exchanges some impressive wing play from Sutton saw the winger glide past two defenders before crossing for Drabble to hook home and quickly put to bed any chances of a giant killing for Newton.
However, the early setback for the minnows didn’t deter them as they continued to battle away and came close to equalising as their lively winger broke through Welton’s back line and from a narrow angle hit the near post forcing Welton to scramble the ball away.
This seemed to wake up Welton and Craig Wilkinson started to boss the midfield winning heavy challenges and feeding Tom Wilkinson and Scott Coupland giving them some creative freedom.
Newton resorted to the long ball but this was bread and butter to the impressive and reformed Dhindsa who won a number of towering headers. Welton’s pressure finally paid off from a corner, Sam Gordon whipped in a beautiful delivery and Drabble powered home a header to get his and Welton’s second of the game.
Big Al’s half time team talk was made easier moments later, good link up play saw Coupland set free to cross for Tom Wilkinson who’s effort was parried by the keeper straight into the path of Gordon to poke home from a yard out.
HALF TIME 3 – 0
Big Al decided to make a couple of tactical changes at half time, pulling back Coupland into midfield, moving Craig Wilkinson to left wing allowing Sutton to partner Drabble upfront. It didn’t take long for the new look strike duo to link up.
A long ball up field from Ossai was picked up by Drabble who fed in Sutton, the Sleafordian beat his man before unselfishly squaring for Drabble to slot home and complete his hat-trick.
Newton were now out of the game and only playing for pride. Four soon became five when Simon Clifford sent through a brilliant defence splitting ball through to Sutton allowing the former Sleaford international to easily knock it past the onrushing keeper and slot home for his first of the game. Welton were now brimming with confidence and playing some lovely attacking football and this created Welton’s sixth, Stocks played the ball into Drabble who layed off to T.Wilkinson who sent a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Sutton to once more round the keeper and slot home for his second.
The scoreline allowed Taylor to make a change replacing Craig Wilkinson with namesake Cosgrove. Welton continued to attack Newton, not content to sit back they wanted to score as many as possible to please the hard to please assistant manager Lee Coupland. The seventh soon came, Coupland now revelling in his role behind the front two playing in Wilkinson to once again unselfishly cross for Drabble to slide in his fourth. This was to be the last of the action for Drabble as he was replaced by Rachid Began who returned from injury after a long lay off.
Newton were now just praying for the final whistle but they had more punishment to endure first. Coupland played in Sutton once again, and the Ruskington-born front man calmly slotted past the Newton keeper allowing him to pick the ball out of the net for the eighth time of the morning. Not to be outdone by his work colleague, Sutton also scored his fourth of the game through another one-on-one and again he took his chance with aplomb.
It is not often Welton have scored nine and the name Coupland isn’t on the scoresheet, and it was no surprise that he was the one to score Welton’s tenth of the morning. Some good interchanging between the joiner and Rash gave Coupland space and from eight yards out Coupland doesn’t miss. Welton ended up 10-0 winners and sent home the hard core supporters who travelled satisfied with a good mornings work.
