TRAVELLING TO THE BANK

Sunday the 10th of February saw Welton in unfamiliar territory League cup quarter final time. The common was the venue for this massive game which would see in form Welton lock horns with the hapless travellers for the second time in 3 weeks. Team news:Welton were without several first choice players for this potential banana skin with Bowey (Manchester derby) and Curtis (suspended) both unavailable this could have spelt disaster for the villagers as Bowey and Curtis tore the travellers to pieces 2 weeks ago at social park, however Big Al was able to recall Clifford L who had returned from his winter sports break and fan favourite Peter (Sutdog) Sutton who would make his first appearance of the season after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a broken collar bone.

The game kicked off with Welton in there changed colours of green and yellow which for many fans will have brought back fond memorys of the unbelievable day on Sudbrooke drive when Welton sent the stags into administration. Any hopes of an upset were quickly destroyed as Welton charged forward and took the lead almost instantly through centre forward James Drabble who bundled home very unconvincingly from 5 yards. This should have opened the floodgates but the einevitable goal rush from Welton would not follow as instantly as expected. Infact Welton were reliant on several good saves from Mayhem to maintain there lead. Welton rode out the short spell of travellers pressure and doubled there advantage midway through the first half through the energetic Coupland who curled a beautiful shot into the bottom corner of the net. 2 should have become 3 straight after as the travellers keeper brilliantly tipped a James Drabble pile driver onto the post only for the rebound to fall to Ward who blazed over the empty net from 6 yards. Minutes later Ward made up for his shocker by brilliantly lobing the keeper from the edge of the box 3 0 Welton. 3 soon became 4 as the impressive Gordon whipped in a cross that the awful travellers centre back Taylor could only flick over his keepers head.
Half Time: Welton 4 - 0 Travellers Rest

The second half began with the expectant travelling supporters hoping for more of the same. They were not dissapointed as Welton surged forward at Will. The inevitable flood of goals came swiftly with goals number 4,5,6,7 and 8 flying in in quick succession. Goals coming from Drabble Ward Coupland and the impressive Sutton. Apologies must be made as this reporter was destracted by the action in the game involving Jon Gurgas Evolution FC on the pitch opposite so sadly Ward and Drabbles goals were missed. However Coupland majestic left foot volley was not missed. Brilliant technique from the midfield trickster with a helpful assist from Captain Stocks who claimed to have kicked the bottom of Coupland Left boot thus adding extra power to the strike. The returning Suttons strike was a cool finish from the tricky right winger who had been sent through brilliantly by Drabble. With Welton 8 goals to the good Big Al saw fit to ring the changes bringing off Captain Stocks for Dhindsa, Gordon off for Daley and Carter withdrawing himself from the action to be replaced by the Ott. These changes seemed to take the wind out of Weltons sails as the half an hour that followed was largely uneventful. The only other meaningful action of the second half saw the Clifford brothers disgrace themselves with S Clifford needlessly hacking down the travellers forward in the area for a penalty to the homeside. S Clifford then talked himself and his younger brother in to the referees notebook for descent. The penalty was cooly dispatched by the travellers forward to complete the scoring at 8 1. So Welton again defeat the travellers and must surely be hoping for double figures against the same opposition next week at the cowpaddle. Welton now have a semi final to look forward to where they have been drawn at home to Rustons in what promises to be another memorable morning down at social park. kay sara sara????????????????
