Snookes capture proves Weltons ambition

TEAMtalk's Mark Holmes reckons Welton's capture of Joe Snookes shows they are adopting a 'quality over quantity' stance in the transfer market.

Al Taylor has been one of the slowest movers in the transfer market this summer and that has led to a lot of frustration from Social fans, especially considering fellow Premier League clubs Eagle and Victory have made a combined 12 new signings.
Taylor has refused to rush, though, and the capture of Snookes is the first he has completed - just four weeks ahead of the Premier League's opening weekend.
It may appear a dangerous game to be playing - his squad is hardly the strongest in the league but the Scotsman has spoken to the likes of Harry Redknapp and Sir Alex Ferguson, and taken advice from other premier league bosses, to establish the best way of keeping a side competitive in the top flight.
Taylor has said on a number of occassions this summer that he has had the chance to sign players. And no doubt there are Social fans out there that would be far happier to have seen six players already sign on at Social Park.
But Taylor insists he will only sign players that are capable of not only competing in the Premier League, but also in the County Cup
So the wait has definitely been worth it for the Social. Taylor claims the other players on his hitlist are of a similar calibre to Snookes and few would bet against him keeping Social up there if he can pull off a couple more signings like that of Snookes.
Taylor is looking to spend close to £20million on four or five new players and add further depth to his squad with some young talent. That is a far better approach to take than splashing out a million here and there on 10 new players, as Greenbank and Cherry did in the past and as Jerusalem look set to do this summer.
It is early days yet and Welton's pursuit of Jason Tinkler proved that chasing big players can often lead to disappointment. Perhaps Taylor will miss out on his other targets and be left with egg on his face as he fails to make any more signings.
But the patience he shows in the transfer market to get the right players in should stand the men from Welton in good stead. It is no point wasting the club's cash on players that he does not truly believe in. Far better for him to take his time to grab the likes of Snookes - proven players with proven reputations.
Taylor has developed an incredible knack of making the right signings for Welton over the last couple of years and swooping for Snookes proves he has not lost it.
If he can keep it up over the next four weeks then one of the Sills and betteridge leagues founder members might just surprise a few people this season.
