De Wint wilt after second half masterclass
Welton overcame first half nerves to seal their place in the first round of the Ron Eaglen Cup with a 10-0 hammering of The Peter De Wint.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, the game was evenly poised at 0-0 at half-time and many of the Welton spectators made for their cars in disgust at the vistors’ display.
However, another inspirational team-talk from the three-pronged managerial force of Alastair Taylor, Lee Coupland and Mac the knife did the trick as The Socialites turned on the style in an utterly dominant second 45.
Scott Coupland grabbed the headlines with a remarkable second half double-hat-trick – the first of his men’s football career, James Drabble (2), Simon Clifford and an own goal sealing the win.
Welton will face CV Eagle in the next round, but first they turn their attentions to a much-deserved week off after a hectic run of cup fixtures.
Pubs and clubs across West Yorkshire now brace themselves for what will surely be another epic weekend of drunken debauchery as the players celebrate the birthdays of the reformed Jaz Dhindsa and former Welton legend Tom Bowey.
Welton started the Ron Eaglen preliminary match kicking towards the famous ‘Wood End’ and the conditions were not helped by a brisk North Easterly breeze sweeping across the pitch.
The game got off to a scrappy start with Welton struggling to find their feet and passes going astray.
Welton did however create their first chance of the morning when a good passing move put in Dhindsa who could only hit the post when one-on-one with the keeper.
This was to be the best chance for the Premier side in the first 45minutes as the crowd and players were both becoming increasingly frustrated with arguably Welton’s worst half performance of the season. Welton did manage to find the net however, when a free kick fell to Coupland who pulled the ball back to Snookes to tap in but the goal was harshly ruled out for a marginal offside decision denying Snookes his first goal in a Welton shirt.
At times it was hard to tell who the Premier side were and who was in Division 6 as Drabbles Richard and Jonathan made a quick dash for the exit at the break.
Although Welton were struggling, keeper Ossai was never really threatened and Welton were able to deal with any De Wint attack with relative ease.
After stern words from the management at half time Welton came out in the second half a different side. The Socialites soon started to find some rhythm and were passing and moving a lot better. It wasn’t long into the half when Welton broke the deadlock.
Gordon had the ball out wide on the right and floated in a deep cross the far post for Drabble to chest past the keeper and with the ball on its way into the goal, Coupland made sure from a yard out.
This goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of resilient Peter De Wint side who had given their all just to compete with Welton.
Welton’s second wasn’t long in coming either, Simon Clifford who had moved into the centre of midfield was becoming more and more influential and it was he who sent through a neat through ball for Coupland to latch onto and finish with aplomb through the legs of the keeper.
Welton were now unlocking the De Wint back four at will, and Coupland was allowed to break free into the oppositions area and pulled the ball back for Dhindsa who had his shot blocked but it fell as far as Drabble who blasted the ball home from yards out.
Drabble turned provider for Welton’s fourth of the morning, the striker dispossessed the De Wint centre half, held off the challenge and fed in Coupland who neatly finished from the edge of the area, with a curled finish beyond the reach of De Wint’s busy keeper, to complete a well deserved hat trick.
Welton’s fifth came after some quick thinking from Craig Wilkinson and Coupland. The former took a short corner to the latter, and before De Wint’s defence had time to react, Coupland fired in a shot to the far post which deflected off a De Wint defender and flew into the back of the net.
This was to be the last of the action for captain Stocks who left the field with a concerning knee injury to be comforted by Welton WAG, Gemsy. Stocks was replaced by Warman and Ross Taylor took over the armband.
Another set piece created the next goal, Gordon whipped in a corner to the near post for Drabble to rush onto and volley past a static keeper for his second of the morning.
For De Wint it was now a case of reducing the scoreline as Welton were ripping them to pieces, the reformed Dhindsa squandered another good chance as he headed over from six yards out before being replaced by Mark Daley, the final change saw ‘The Mole’ fresh from his birthday celebrations replace the ineffective Carter.
Coupland had no intention of holding off and scored his fifth and Welton’s seventh of the morning after some good passing saw Simon Clifford play in Coupland who turned well before toe poking past the keeper.
Seven became eight soon after in bizarre fashion. Mark Daley took advantage of the narrow pitch by launching a long throw into the box and it was headed in by an unlucky De Wint defender past his own keeper when unchallenged.
There was still time for Coupland to complete his first ever double hat trick in mens football when he was once again played in by Simon Clifford and with plenty of time he coolly slotted the ball past the keeper.
De Wint had desperately been trying to prevent Welton reaching double figures but this was just a step too far for the division six side. Substitute Warman sent over a searching ball to Craig Wilkinson, the midfielder lobbed the ball over to Simon Clifford who fired in a deserved goal and Weltons tenth of the morning.
Welton ran out 10–0 winners a score that possibly was to be expected before kick off but looked very unlikely at half-time. Welton will now play host to CV Eagle in the next round of the competition who easily defeated Cherry Willingham 5 – 0.
