Wakelen set for Hackett meeting

Referees' chief Keith Hackett will meet with Paul Wakelen to discuss the official's handling of the game between Welton and Newcastle.

Wakelen 40, became the Premier League's youngest ever referee when he took charge of the 1-1 draw between Stags and Fiskerton at Sudbroke Drive in August 1988, but he has since hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. and he is under the spotlight after a string of contentious decisions at Social Park on Sunday.

Wakelen angered Newcastle fans in the first half of last Sundays County Cup classic at Social Park when he awarded Welton a disputed Penalty which was subsequently saved by the Newcastle keeper.

Wakelen also failed to send off Newcastle defender and former Nortoft Boys pratt Jack Smith who was guilty of several discusting challenges throughout the epic 120 minutes. Smith could have received a straight red for a ridiculous push on Simon Clifford which he followed up with a two footed lunge at Joe Snookes. Wakelen opted for a yellow rather than a red.

Wakelen also failed to dismiss Smith for a horrific two footed lunge at Welton sub Leigh Warman which was more than worthy of a straight red, To the amazement of all at Social Park Smith didn’t even receive a second Yellow.

Newcastles boss criticised the official in his post-match interviews while Welton manager Al Taylor also admitted he was left flabbergasted by some of his decisions.

Hackett will assess Wakelens performance at Social Park on Tuesday and hopes this latest setback in his fledging career will not affect the 40-year-old's confidence or reputation.

"I wasn't at the game and I haven't had chance to see it either, but there was an assessor at the game and we await his report," said Hackett.
