The Road to the Bank

They say all roads lead somewhere and so far this season that has been the case for Welton Sports and Social Club FC as all roads they have embarked on have lead to Sincil Bank.

In the first of a three part trilogy we look back on Weltons epic journey to this Sundays Ron Eaglen Cup Final against Ruston Sports a road that has seen Welton defeat 5 different opponents scoring 23 goals and conceding just 5.

Preliminary Round 09/11/2008- Peter De Wint (Away)

Welton faced a daunting away day at renowned yobs Peter De Wint of Division 6. Welton started the game like rabbits caught in the headlights of Big Als van and the Division 6 minnows held firm keeping the score level at 0-0 going into half time. Weltons Nerve held though and after the break Welton rattled home 10 (ten) without reply six of these goals were notched up by Scott Coupland.

Round 1: 21/12/2008- CW Golden Eagle (Home)

Weltons 1st round match eventually got under way after being postponed the week before and Welton faced Division 1 Cup specialists Golden Eagle who were one of only three Lincoln based sides left in the County Cup at this stage of the season. Welton produced a professional performance running out 4-0 winners over the Division 1 side with the goals coming from Stocks, Tom Wilkinson and a brace for Scott Coupland.

Round 2: 18/01/2009 FSC Victory (Home)

For the second year in a row Welton were drawn against difficult Premier Division side FSC Victory in the second round. This game saw the return of fan favourite Tom Bowey to the fold and signalled the end of the dreaded 3-5-2 formations reign of terror on the side. Welton raced into a two goal lead with goals from Simon and Luke Clifford. Welton appeared to be cruising into the next round but were pegged back by a freak goal from a Sean Booth corner and an even more bizarre Jaz Dhindsa own goal. Panic ensued at Social Park until Neil Stocks thirty yard pea roller somehow squirmed past the keeper to make it 3-2 and Luke Clifford made the win safe adding the fourth.

Quarter Final 22/02/09 Swan Athletic (Home)

Promotion chasing Division 1 side Swan Athletic were considered a genuine threat with their infamous physical style. Boasting players like local legend Dave Sampher and battering ram centre forward Rob Kinsella, The Swan made life a living hell for Welton. Things started brightly enough for the Socialites on a horrendous Social Park pitch as they took the lead through Simon Clifford but they were promptly pegged back to 1-1 and the scores stayed this way until Tom Wilkinson netted with a touch of fortune to send the Socialites into a Semi Final showdown with arch rivals and Cup favourites GE Millers.

Semi Final 08/03/09 GE Millers Arms (H)

Semi Final fever was in full swing in Welton as 7 days prior to this match Welton had successfully booked their place in the County Cup Final with a 5-0 drubbing of T.A.S.Y. Revenge was on the minds of the Socialites as this was the first time the sides had met since last seasons Cup Final. Welton took the lead through Scott Coupland who placed a wonderful header into the Millers net from a Luke Cliford pull back but as has happened so many times this season Welton conceded straight away as Martin Goldacre capitalised on defensive confusion to level the tie and the sides went in at half time one each. Welton returned for the second half much the better of the two sides and raced into a two goal lead as Luke Clifford helped himself to another fine brace of goals. A late goal from Ward pulled one back for the Millers but Welton held firm and marched into their second consecutive Ron Eaglen Cup Final.
