Drabble The Difference In Welton Win
Welton kicked off their offence on the County Cup today against Scunthorpe Division 1 side Warren Lodge. The game very nearly didn’t go ahead after Lodge attempted to call the game off and hand the tie to Welton, but the FA stepped in and the fixture was reinstated.
It was a very different Welton side to the one that famously beat Stags last week with
Big Al missing several first-team members with Wilkinson, Gordon, Mulhall and Jones all unavailable. Matt Perry, Jaz Dhindsa, Joe Drabble, Matt Wilkinson and Simon Ward all came in with Bowey returning on the bench. The Social Club were also without regular first-teamers James Drabble and William Carter – they were told not to travel after being caught drinking in a bar at 2AM on the morning of the game.
Welton started the match brightly, creating a lot of chances before finally breaking the deadlock through Joe Drabble. Fellow striker Simon Ward chipped the ball into the tricky forward who made no mistake in slotting it past the unwieldy Lodge goalkeeper.
Drabble soon made it 2-0 with Ward once again the provider. The mortgage advisor shanked his first pass but made amends with a clever dink over the defence for Drabble to run onto. He finished the move with a quaint lob over the onrushing keeper to get his second of the afternoon.
Two soon turned to three, with Luke Clifford getting in on the action. Welton winger Mark Curtis played a clever one-two with the impressive Drabble through a maze of Lodge defenders on the right before executing a splendid cross onto the head of Clifford. The powerhouse made no mistake in nodding home from 6 yards with a solid finish into the top corner of the net.
Drabble could have had his hat-trick before half time but failed to convert from 6 yards after Curtis had crossed. The forward could only steer his effort onto the goalkeeper’s right-hand post before the defence cleared for a corner.
HALF TIME: WELTON S&SC 3 – 0 WARREN LODGE FC
Welton started the second half with a distinctively relaxed attitude and let Lodge back into the game. The side from Scunthorpe could not capitalise however, despite the casual efforts of their Number 14.
The game was put to bed when Joe Drabble sealed his hat trick, smashing in from close range.
With the game safely in the bag Welton made a change, bringing on Bowey for Curtis. The young businessman had an immediate impact, finding space on the edge of the box the recently-returned midfielder jinxed past his man an executed a magnificent placed shot into the bottom corner to make it 5-0 to the Social Club.
When the dust settled it was 6-0, Drabble adding to an impressive performance with his fourth goal of the day. The rookie journalist wrote himself into the headlines with a goal of sheer technical brilliance. Bowey’s excellent cross-field pass was brought down deftly by Drabble and slotted past a flailing keeper in the coolest of fashions.
Despite a careless second half performance, Welton progress into the second round of the County Cup and a bid for the quadruple has been well and truly launched.
