Reserves hit Metheringham for six!

The Reserves got their League season off to a winning start with an emphatic 6-0 win over Metheringham reserves. James Drabble fresh from his Golden boot winning season last year got his campaign off to another tremendous start with 4 goals ably assisted by new Reserve team Captain Tom Bowey who chipped in with two goals before his industrious performance was tarnished by a yellow card for a shameless dive.

Management duo Mark Daly and Paul Schaer were faced with huge selection problems before kick off with 18 players making themselves available for selection. That 18 were eventually whittled down to a starting eleven of Matt Wilkinson in goal with a back four of Connor…. At left back, Matt Gordon and Lee Cooper at centre back with Dan Carlile at right back. Welton went with 5 across the middle Ottewell on the left, Beard on the right with Stocks, Munn and Bowey in the middle with James Drabble ploughing the lone furrow up front.

Metheringham started brightly but were soon undone by a clever set piece. Alex Munn floated in a delightful ball to the back post for the unmarked James Drabble who headed weakly at the Metheringham keeper but made no mistake after the keeper spilled his header smashing home from fully three yards out.

Welton went from strength to strength after the opening goal with Drabble clinically grabbing his second of the morning ten minutes later. Good play down the left saw the ball arrive at Drabbles feet, one touch with the right foot lead to his second touch with the left which was a shot that almost broke the net giving the keeper no chance.

New Captain Tom Bowey squandered a great chance to make it three after taking on the whole of the Metheringham defence and twice sitting the keeper on his backside but somehow the trickster failed to convert, Neil stocks also had a goal disallowed aswell as working a brilliant opening for himself before curling a left footed effort against the corner flag which meant that the Welton went in at half time 2-0 up.

Any hopes Metheringham may have had for a second half revival were dashed within 3 touches of the ball in the second half. Welton kicked off and the ball was played back to Neil Stocks who arrowed a tremendous ball to Ryan Ottewell on the left wing, Ottewell crossed perfectly for Drabble who headed the ball back the way it came past the goalkeeper into the top corner to complete his hat trick in some style.

This effectively ended the game as a contest and it wasn’t long before Tom Bowey brilliantly tricked his way into the box before pulling back for Drabble to tap home and grab his fourth of the morning.

Daly and schaer rang the changes bringing on Mulhall, Kelsey and Ward to replace Beard, Drabble and Connor…. And the game continued to flow in much the same vein.

Tom Bowey took centre stage heading home another superb left wing cross from Ryan Ottewell at the far post to make it five.

The Welton skipper tarnished a proud day for the Bowey family tjough receiving a yellow card for simulation. Bowey appeared to go down very easily in the left hand side of the area but the referee waved away Boweys theatrics to award Welton a corner, From the resulting corner Bowey left the weighty official with no choice but to produce a yellow card after the Welton captain again hurled himself towards the turf under very little pressure from the Metheringham defence.

Bowey regained a little bit of dignity though when he curled a delightful left footed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to complete the rowt getting his men off to a brilliant start to the season with a fine 6-0 victory.
