Successful semi for Socialites

Welton’s quest to retain their Kelly Read Cup for the fourth straight season continues as the Socialites edged out Waddington United by a single goal to nil in a very uneventful Semi Final, Billy Munro’s effort 3 minutes into the second half was enough to see the Socialites through.

Welton named a much changed side for the visit to Waddington, Phil McGann was protected by his usual back four but a string of enforced changes saw a midfield quartet of Olly Furness and Jason Tinkler on the flanks with Sam Allmond and Jack McGovern in the middle.

Welton looked lethargic from the outset and Waddington’s work ethic and spirit more than kept them in the game as Welton struggled to create many clear cut chances, Jason Tinklers long range dipping half volley forced the only good save from either keeper in a very uneventful first half.

HALF TIME: Waddington United 0-0 Welton S&SC

Welton returned unchanged for the second half with stinging criticism in their ears, This appeared to have the desired effect as Welton finally took the lead with a couple of minutes gone in the second half.

Scott Coupland played the ball through to his strike partner Billy Munro who fired home a first time effort past the keeper at his near post to give the Cup holders the lead.

The Socialites never really kicked on from here as might have been expected given the gulf in league positions of the two sides and to their credit Waddington made it difficult for Welton although it could also be said that Welton were architects of their own downfall with most players maybe having one eye on next Weeks fixtures?.

Despite a lacklustre performance, Welton never looked in any real danger of conceding and an encouraging ninety minutes from Jason Tinkler and Luke Clifford appearing to come through a late10 minute cameo at the end unscathed meant that Welton could take some positives from the game, that on top of progressing to their 10th Cup Final in 5 seasons should mean that Welton go into their last 4 games where they will be looking to win 4 trophies in confident mood.
