Jay leads the way for five star Social

Welton S&SC stormed into the semi finals of the County Cup for the third time in 5 seasons with an entertaining 5-2 win against Premier League rivals Hykeham Athletic. Goals from Jamie Chesman, Olly Furness, Scott Coupland and 2 for the returning Jason Tinkler gave Welton safe passage to the semis.

Welton started brightly and were soon in front when Jamie Chesman bundled home a scrappy goal as the Hykeham defence struggled to clear Matt O Hallorans left wing corner.

This goal seemed to galvanise the Hykeham players though and they put Welton under the cosh for much of the first half with Welton relying on a couple of goal line clearances from Joe Snookes amongst others.

Welton absorbed the pressure well though and looked lethal on the break with Will Carter holding the ball up well to release Scott Coupland who unselfishly squared the ball to Furness to finish well from just inside the area past former Welton maverick Michael Jones.

2 soon became 3 when more great link up play between Weltons attacking trio lead to Jason Tinkler cutting in from the left hand side to smash home a right footed strike from the edge of the area past Jones.

With ten minutes to go to half time Welton appeared to be in complete control but a customary switch off from the whole team unbelievably allowed Hykeham to score 2 goals before half time and leave Welton grateful for the half time whistle

Half Time: Hykeham Athletic 2-3 Welton S&SC

Hykeham really finished the first half with their tails up and Weltons pocket of visiting supporters may have been concerned that more of the same was to come in the second half but Welton controlled the second half from the outset if truth be told.

However it wasn’t until midway through the second half that Welton made the game safe though and it was Tinkler who was sent racing into the area by the impressive Carter to dink the ball perfectly over the advancing Jones to give Welton breathing space.

Scott Coupland grabbed his customary goal when Weltons front three conbined again this time to send Weltons ponytailed skipper through to dink the ball over Jones to make it five.

Hykeham had their moments but some excellent defending ensured that it was the Socialites who were back in the Semi Finals where a resurgent Cleethorpes Town, The Ropsley Fox and Ivy Tavern await in todays draw.
