Sawyer – Whats wrong with a beer?

Welton Sports & Social Clubs assistant manager Mac Sawyer has today spoken out on the recent binge drinking crisis surrounding the club. In an interview with Welton News Sawyer stated he did not have a problem with his stars having a few beers the night before a game as long as they still turned up on a Sunday morning and got the results.

Sawyer went onto say, “When I was a young lad it was the norm to go out on a Saturday night and have a few beers with the lads. We would have drank more than these boys of today but it never affected our performance on a Sunday morning. That is the sign of a great Sunday league player!”

This statement from Sawyer will not have gone down well with manager Alistair Taylor and in particular his assistant Lee Coupland who has issued a zero tolerance alcohol ban to his squad in their bid for silverware this season.

Sawyer continued to add “They are all young and should be enjoying themselves. You have to select your fixtures wisely and Tower at home was a prime example of that, if it was a big game like GE Millers I think they are all sensible enough and know the importance to have an early night. The boys should be having a field day with the upcoming fixtures of Fairdeal Carpets and Division 6 minnows Newton United”

When asked if he will be joining the players on a night out “ We will have to wait and see” Sawyer laughed.

We tried to contact Players Representative Will Carter for his views on Sawyers statement but he was unwilling to comment.
