JOHNSON PROUD OF WELTON’S START.

Released squad player Will Johnson has expressed his joy at the early season form shown by his former team-mates. Following his acrimonious exit from Social Park during the summer, Johnson insists that he bares no grudges against the Welton hierarchy and fully expects an impressive season from the rural outfit.

Welton’s season has begun impressively and following four consecutive victories Big Al’s men find themselves perched at the top of the Lincoln Sunday League tree. Johnson said: “Having spoken to some of the lads over the summer it was clear they were confident, excited and more than ready for the new season. I think this has a lot to do with the introduction of Lee (Coupland) to the backroom staff because that boy has a fantastic knowledge of the game. This is by no means a criticism of the managerial old-guard but in today’s game you need someone with the fresh-thinking and innovative ideas, Lee is the man”.

Having himself been a product of Welton’s famous academy set-up Johnson understands the importance of bringing players through the ranks. The versatile performer said: “Carter, Joe, Gord and Dhinny have been with the club for years and know just what success means to the supporters; they understand that a Sunday morning victory keeps the fans happy all week. The fact that the players and supporters share a couple of beers after the game come win, lose or draw pays testament to this relationship”.

Johnson was similarly quick to praise the blend of old and new at the club, which he says is a consequence of Big Al’s successful transfer policy: “Looking at the Welton squad there is vast experience of top flight football in the shape of Rossco, Stocks and Drabble, even Carter at twenty-two has chalked up a ton of appearances. At the same time you have the likes of Dhindsa and Wilko (Tom) who have incredible talent but not necessarily the knowledge of those January mornings on the Cow Paddle. But with time they are learning, and Big Al realises that he has a recipe for success”.

The final ingredient for success, says Johnson, is the array of class acts on show at Social Park. Johnson commented: “I have been watching Welton’s live games on Sky and the cosmopolitan mix of talent is breathtaking. The passing and movement is electric and the finishing has been exquisite. I was glad to see Ronnie break his goal scoring duck last weekend; he is a confidence player that when on form is a fantastic asset”.

A season of silverware and glory is predicted by Johnson who, despite his pre-season departure, will be there to revel in any success come May. Johnson finished: “If Welton continue their early season form, and with a little luck, Big Al best make room in the trophy cabinet; I believe in the players and firmly believe that this is their season”.
