Welton came up short against FSC Victory at the Cowpaddle last night losing 1-0 allowing Victory to retain the Premier League title.
The Socialites shot themselves in the foot early on infront of a bumper crowd at the Cowpaddle when Shaun Booth was able to head home Billy Fosters long throw with only 5 minutes gone.
If Welton were to get anything from the game they were always going to have to score first but unfortunatley this wasn’t the case and minutes later Ben Good almost made it 2-0 but he blasted wide from a tight angle when one on one with Phil McGann.
Welton started to play their way back into the game dominating the lions share of possession but it wasn’t until the half hour mark that Matt O Halloran was able to force a tremendous save from Rick Duffin in the Victory goal.
Neil Stocks almost converted a mad scramble from a corner but that was as close as Welton got really.
HALF TIME: FSC Victory1-0 Welton S&SC
A frustrating second half ensued for Welton as Victory set their stall out to not concede and again Welton were restricted to half chances from the edge of the area that on another day may have hit the target.
Welton again it is fair to say dominated possession and territory but Victory always carried a threat going forward with Ben Good and Shaun Booth carrying a threat up front as Victory were content to break up Welton’s play and hoof the ball forward playing to the strengths of their talented strike duo.
A frustrating evening all around for Welton and with the game cut short due to bad light Welton left empty handed. The majority of the crowd would probably say a draw would have been a fair result but that still wouldn’t have been enough for Welton so Welton have to hold their hands up and say fair play to Victory who did what they had to do.
Welton’s season is of course far from over and they can now look forward to the Cup finals that have been in the back of their minds for so long starting with this Sunday’s trip to Sincil Bank to face Fox & Hounds.
