VUVUZELA INVASION

Lincolnshire football supporters are bracing themselves for a mass invasion of the vuvuzelas next season.

Fans have been snapping-up the noisy trumpets in their dozens and plan to take them to Premier League games on Sunday mornings.

And Welton Chairman Clive Wilkinson admits that Welton are torn between cashing in on the craze or banning them from Social Park completely.

The droning buzz of the tribal trumpets has been the annoying sound of the World Cup so far and Welton fan Will Johnson has been importing them home from his trip to South Africa and claims he has already sold 42 of the horns to fellow Welton fans.

Johnson said: “As they are only £2, they have been selling like hot cakes. I sold one horn every two seconds on Saturday.

“They are being used to create a World Cup atmosphere here in the UK and are adding to people’s enjoyment of the football.”

Welton are thought to be considering selling branded horns.

Paddy Power are also taking bets on which Premier League club will be the first to sell branded vuvuzelas, with Welton favourites at 4-1, followed by GE Rustons 6-1, FSC Victory 7-1 and Scothern at 8-1.

Clive Wilkinson said: “Love them or hate them, vuvuzela is going to be the word of this World Cup.”

“Fans are going to buy these things – there’ll be a feeling at the big clubs that if someone’s going to sell these things, it might as well be us.”

But others reckon the vuvuzelas’ arrival at Lincoln clubs will be a disaster.

Some supporters are demanding clubs and the Lincs FA makes a decision to ban the vuvuzela fast.

Welton fan Tommy Andrews said: “Listening to these things in South Africa is one thing, having to put up with them sat in the John Stanham stand at Social Park is quite another.”
