Coupland: Tis NOT the season to be jolly and joyous

Welton S&SC assistant manager Lee Coupland is worried that the euphoria surrounding the annual Christmas bash on Sunday could jeopardise the Socialites assault on the Ron Eaglen Cup.

“Sunday is a very big game for us and we need to apply ourselves 100% in order to avoid an upset.”

“The christmas do is brilliant for team spirit but last years event went along way towards costing us the league title, when we slipped up at home to Metheringham on the morning of the Christmas do.”

“That would be an absolute disaster if that happened again this year as we are genuine contenders to win this years cup.”Coupland told the Lincolnshire Echo.

Weltons second round clash with CW Golden Eagle fell victim to the weather last week which is a shame for Welton as they were at full strength apart from the absence of Sam Gordon, Now Welton must face the Division 1 cup specialists without first choice goalkeeper Rick Ossai.

Coupland is deeply concerned that some of his stars are taking their opponents lightly.

“Last week before the game some of the players were badly hungover and I hope this will not be the case this week because if 5 of our starting 11 turn up with a hangover again this week, we will get turned over.”

Coupland refused to name and shame the players mentioned but it is thought that James Drabble, Joe Drabble, Jaz Dhindsa and Will Carter were the main culprits as all four were seen to be very happy with the referees decision to abandon the game. All four of the Welton stars were seen entering Jaz Dhindsas Reepham Toft mansion on Saturday afternoon carrying copious amounts of alcohol and were looking very much worse for wear when they eventually left later that night. It is even said that Carter was to hungover to leave his countryside estate on the Sunday afternoon.

“I’ve spoken to the lads involved last weekend” said Coupland

“They’ve told me that they only went out because they thought the game would be called off and I believe them and they have assured me they will be in bed early on Saturday night. I hope this is to rest ahead of the big game and not because they want to feel fresh for the party on Sunday night.”
