Clifford L fires warning to defence

Welton superstar Luke Clifford has warned his team-mates they cannot afford any more basic defensive errors against FSC Victory on Sunday.

Welton have been working on defending from set-pieces in training this week as Al Taylor and Lee Coupland attempt to stamp out errors that are beginning to cost their team goals.

"The errors at the weekend have been very frustrating for everyone involved because we do work on them in training anyway," said Clifford.

“We were lucky on Sunday that they weren’t great at the back but that will not be the case with Victory.”

"Sometimes it has been an individual error or a collective one, but it has been very important because we dominated the last game and we still conceded 4 goals despite 6 different defenders playing.”

"We can't afford to let that happen against a team of Victorys calibre."

The week before Welton squandered 15 chances to kill off plucky CW Golden Eagle in their Ron Eaglen cup third-round tie the weekend before and Taylor initially focused on their poor finishing.

However, the Scottish coach has now turned his attentions to the opposite end of the pitch after Sundays County Cup epic, with more emphasis on defending free-kicks, throw-ins and corners.

Bobby Sharpe was unmarked when he fired in an unlikely goal to give Janneys the lead on Sunday and their first goal came from a rare goalkeeping error which again came from a cross.

Taylor has now added defender Jamie Chesman to his already packed squad to create further competition for places at the back.

Welton will welcome back Craig Cosgrove and will finally be able to unleash Tom Bowey against Victory at Social Park on Sunday morning. The wideman will be making his second debut for the Social after returning from Leeds.

Midfielder Sam Gordon is the only player definatley unavailable on Sunday.
